Forget Those Ugly Holiday Sweaters! Give Yourself the Gift of Simple, Sophisticated BI. I didn’t get the present I wanted for the holidays or for my last birthday? I got gift cards to stores I don’t like and ugly sweaters! YUCK! What I REALLY needed was a better way to manage my business. I didn’t know whether my goals were achievable or if I was making any headway in the market.

Ok. You already know that mobility is kind of a big deal in business intelligence. A recent survey from TechTarget shows that while only 9% of companies currently have a mobile BI solution, that number is projected to grow to 48% in the next year. A little too ambitious? Probably. But you get the idea. What’s not as well known, though, is that an investment in mobile BI also packs a measurable ROI in areas like productivity, engagement and decision-making speed.

Why Balanced Scorecards are the BEST! I am part of a task force. We are trying to understand our declining customer profitability (and we’d better do it fast or I will have to update my resume). We are trying to gather the information, but with so many data sources, it’s hard to make sense of things. Even where we are able to compile data, we aren’t sure we really understand the source of the problem.

In a recent customer survey we asked how many unique key performance indicators (KPIs) they use in their company. We had choices from under 10 KPIs to over 1,000 KPIs. This chart shows the results of the survey. A common reason given for having less than 10 KPIs is “we limit the number of KPIs so we can focus”. This has been considered a best practice but is it still?
