See the Future! Psychics vs. Accurate Business Forecasting and Trend Analysis

ElegantJ BI

See the Future! Psychics vs. Accurate Business Forecasting and Trend Analysis. Do you have a psychic on your staff? I didn’t think so. Most of us would find it hard to justify that kind of resource to our management team. Still, the idea is intriguing. Wouldn’t it be great to identify trends and patterns and respond appropriately? You could be there before your competition, and probably get a promotion in the process.

Business and IT Professionals View BI Differently

Domo

I’ve had a boatload of conversations with customers and prospects about their needs for a business intelligence solution. While every company’s needs are unique, there’s a common theme in each conversation: business users and IT professionals view BI differently. Both views are important, but they have very different expectations. This is one of the reasons I started Domo.

Are You Focused on the Rule or the Exception? Hint: Throw Away the Rule Book

ElegantJ BI

Are You Focused on the Rule or the Exception? Hint: Throw Away the Rule Book. In life, we usually focus on the rule, rather than the exception to the rule. ‘The rule’ is what will usually happen, and if we plan for that, we should be OK. In business, it is the exception that will cause us to lose revenue, competitive advantage and market share. Not to sound too melodramatic but if you had a way to identify the exception before or as it was happening and handle the situation before it becomes cri

The Other Cost of Sales

Domo

Being a top salesperson isn’t cheap. I like that. If you’ve followed my startup rules, you might remember this one ( JJSR 8 ) — Find salespeople who love to spend money: watches, cars, houses. The more they spend, the better your prospects. But you have to set them up for success, too. That means making sure they’re spending most of their time actually selling and not filing reports or digging for data, which as you can see from the Domo infographic below, is a more common pr

Introducing CEO.com

Domo

CEO.com is a website I launched before starting Domo. When I was CEO of Omniture, I was constantly looking for stories and inspiration that would help me be a better leader. I wanted to create a resource to help myself and other executives stay up-to-date with what’s happening at the leadership level across top industries and have the latest strategies and best practices in business management all in one place.

From Co-Workers to Team Zombie Fighters

I must start off with a confession. I’m now on Pinterest. But just to be clear, I have never repinned anything containing arugula, feta cheese, dried flowers, or chiffon (the cake – material is another story). That being said, not all of us here at Domo are newbies to social media. Some of us have experimented. Some are recreational users. Others are so whacked out that they “check in” at the dinner table ( @nedadams anyone?).

Going Out of My Comfort Zone

Domo

I’m a software developer. Being social on the internet has meant furthering my career. I’ve had technology blogs, used Twitter, and talked in forums and newsgroups. None of those interactions were on a personal level. It’s always been about technology or troubleshooting a coding problem I had been having. The #domosocial experiment was jolting and a bit frightening to me.

The New School of Dashboards

Domo

I like old school. Sometimes. Cars, clothes, shoes, art…they can all be cool with a throwback style. But business intelligence, and dashboards in particular, is a different story. Cobbling together a few disconnected charts, throwing in a couple of stoplights and waiting for it all to refresh once a day used to qualify as a dashboard. Now, things are different.

It’s About the Experience

Domo

When Domo announced the #domosocial experiment, I was a little surprised. I thought to myself, “Doesn’t everyone already use Facebook and Twitter?” Why do we need to encourage more of that? Then I realized that perhaps this isn’t just about using more products — perhaps this is about something bigger. For thousands of years people have done their best to live in a world where things are done inefficiently.

Confessions of a Social Network Neophyte

Domo

When Josh started to roll out the details of the #domosocial experiment, I got the distinct feeling of trepidation. I’ve been fairly quiet in the social networking space, and this experiment would require consistent and active participation on my part. This could seriously jeopardize my goal of never appearing on the first page of a Google Search of my name, or perhaps posting something that I would not like the rest of the world to see.

The Social World Isn’t Your Stage

I’m a performer at heart and don’t mind being the center of attention. So when Josh James announced the #domosocial experiment, I immediately started to think of how I was going to attract some attention in the social sphere. Having studied social media in college, I’m fully aware of the positive mojo it can bring to a company. However, I was trained from the perspective of a company — not as an individual.

Why I Am Taking My Ball And Going Home

For about a month in 1987, when I was in 5th grade, foursquare took over as the game of choice at Draper Elementary. While football was still king for the 30-minute lunch recess, foursquare dominated the shorter 15-minute morning and afternoon recess time slots. I often found myself in the square tangling with some of the best athletes the school had to offer.

Initial Employee Feedback — In Pictures

Domo

To capture some baseline metrics and preliminary feedback on the #domosocial experiment, we asked employees to take an online survey. Suffice it to say, I’m glad to see that learning something new is by far the number one thing people said they are excited about. This supports the buzz we’ve been hearing in the hallways and seeing on Twitter. When it comes to what worries people, the time commitment and a fear of doing something stupid were reported as the two most common concerns.

Like (I imagine) most employees here with a more-or-less established social media presence, to describe my initial reaction to yesterday’s presentation as “reserved” would be generous. They’re not a part of me you’re entitled to benefit from as an employer.
