Need to know Who, What, Where and Why? Ditch the Old Reports and Add Some BI to Your Life! I can’t take it anymore! I am tired of mountains of reports (none of which make any sense), incorrect, out-of-date info, missing data, and incompetent reporting software and ERP and legacy systems that crank out numbers, words and graphs without meaning! I WANT BIZINTEL!

In a recent customer survey we asked how many unique key performance indicators (KPIs) they use in their company. We had choices from under 10 KPIs to over 1,000 KPIs. This chart shows the results of the survey. A common reason given for having less than 10 KPIs is “we limit the number of KPIs so we can focus”. This has been considered a best practice but is it still?

I am 35 years old and I have never had a massage. Crazy? Maybe. I like to think I know what I am doing. The fact of the matter is I am quite certain I would love the experience, but I don’t want to “need” the experience to the tune of $50-$100/month. I know friends who “have to get a massage” every few weeks; they are addicted now.

I was recently thinking back to a panel I was on with a VP at SAP discussing Business Intelligence (BI) and what makes companies best-in-class. The moderator was a leading BI analyst. The topic of discussion was of course BI, but more importantly, what differentiating elements can help companies improve business performance through a BI dashboard. There’s a lot of gravity in business sometimes. Take reporting. Every job requires some measure of reporting – and although the process we use today might be manual, tedious and time-consuming, we often stick with it because it’s comfortable and we assume that a better solution will be too expensive, too complex or even too successful. We have this conversation a lot with prospective customers.

At the age of 16, my summer job was more of a mini-career. A neighbor who owned a small but highly-successful marketing company gave me a company BMW and an expense account. While my friends toiled in the summer heat mowing lawns or painting houses, I sped across the Northeast presenting to clients and attending trade shows. Lucky as I was, most of those days have been forgotten – except one.

As a young boy in the mid-80’s, I often found myself cheering the G.I. JOE team during their epic battles against the evil Cobra organization. At the end of each episode, after hundreds of laser blasts that never seemed to hit anything and the only casualty being Cobra Commander’s ego due to another foiled plot of world domination, there was a short range of scenes dedicated to the life instruction of the JOE followers.
