My three-year-old granddaughter has a number of favorite books that she likes me to read to her. There are well-understood organizational design patterns and businessarchitectures to orchestrate the manner in which work gets done to support a vision. One is a story about Helen Keller.
And I guess, Dean Leffingwell came out with the first book on scaled agile. What we had to flip them into first was a business capability aligned organization organized around their businessarchitecture. And then what you start to see is that there’s clusters of dependencies across that businessarchitecture.
It is possible to do Scrum by the book and not create the results. Businessarchitecture? Can they produce a working tested increment of software every week or two that can be validated by an end customer? If you are doing Scrum or XP and cannot do that, you aren’t doing Agile very well. Even if you are doing Scrum well.
I read a lot of the books and I mean, I think there are definitive definitions, but as individuals, a lot of times we’re using that word pretty loosely. Imagine a world where the businessarchitecture, business capability model, domain-driven design, product architecture, and key strategies are in alignment.
So, that was kind of cool, the thing that I was doing like right before we met was I had been brought into Microsoft as a contractor, building out a businessarchitecture practice, I think they called motion. So, I was helping Microsoft build a businessarchitecture practice, on the tail of that. – Hmm.
About 15 years ago I decided to pluck up the courage to set up in business on my own and established Scarlett Solutions, a boutique consultancy firm specialising in Business Analysis, BusinessArchitecture and change delivery.
And this was like way before the days Dean Leffingwell hadn’t even written his first book on scaling. And businessarchitecture kind of a nebulous term, but how do you form teams? It’s I need to align around the businessarchitecture. None of the stuff on scaling was out there. That kind of a thing.
So I think a lot about the intersection, maybe businessarchitecture, organizational design, domain design, product type organizations, product driven organizations and such. We tend to move on the business process product development side. It seems like the business is using the language of businessarchitecture.

Examples of associations include, Supplier and the products that they can provide Employee and the sales they have made Customers and the bookings they have made. Associations are a core part of a business data architecture. The conceptual level models also show the ‘associations’ or ‘relationships’ between the concepts.
That’s typically what I’m talking about with the idea of services team Dean talks about in his first safe book, gosh, 10, 12 years ago or something like that, maybe it was a second safe book. He talks about at some level of scale you’re going to have to have some sort of a component architecture.

I’ve read some books, I thematically know what it is, but I also know there’s a lot of people that get very prescriptive in terms of what domain design is domain-driven design is, and what the words mean and how it’s applied and it’s a thing and all this stuff. Probably one of the most interesting books.
